Nantucket Shenanigans

Our very own Jack Thomas, local historian and all round good egg, has self-published a book for young people.  The book can be purchased from lulu.com or you can buy copies directly from the back of the Uplyme Church building.  (I wonder if we could get all these books we are writing in the local shop? Ed.)

More Tea Vicar?

A couple of years ago, I did an unprecedented thing.  I unplugged myself from Facebook.  One morning I had an epiphany that I was not controlling Facebook, but Facebook was controlling me.  In a move of desperate counter-culturalism, and without warning my (satisfyingly extensive, cough) network of friends, acquaintances, and people that I had never met, I deleted my account.  Despite feeling slightly bereaved, I felt liberated.  I was free.

Axmouth Flower Festival

The Axmouth Community are celebrating their flower festival this weekend. It runs from today (Friday) through to Monday. The flowers look stunning and there is a special community gathering taking place at 10am in the Axmouth Church Building.  See you there!

More tea vicar?

Have you ever wondered why a church service is called a service?  Who is it servicing?  The title conjures up the idea that in some way, something is being dispensed to the people that gather.  We, the gathered are being served.  I have to confess that this is why I sneakily change the title from ‘service’ to ‘gathering’ in our literature, on the website, on bulletins and on posters.  Perhaps this is in some vain hope that the emphasis of our meetings will be on community and not on that which is being dispensed from the front.
